In the process of ship’s berthing, unberthing and operating, there is need crew conduct a series of operations on the steering wheel, telegraph and cable equipment, therefore, it is necessary to simulate crew and their motion in ship handling simulator. The visual system of V.Dragon 3000 ship handling simulator which developed by Marine dynamic simulation and control laboratory of Dalian Maritime University can only simulate the man overboard, and the effect is poor. This paper researches the virtual human technology deeply, and join the virtual human to the visual system of ship handling simulator, enrich the content of visual system, improve the effect of the crew training.The main research work of this paper is as follows:First, this paper created a hierarchical geometrical model which has a skin, muscle and bone of virtual human by using the method of hierarchical modeling in 3D Studio Max(3ds Max) modeling software, the geometric model of virtual human is vivid, and with a strong sense of reality.Second, this paper realized the motion control of virtual human by controlling the skeleton of geometric model of in 3ds Max modeling software with key frame animation method, and completed actions such as walking, steering, maneuvering of virtual human, realized the simulation of real crew actions better.Third, this paper mastered the design method of A* algorithm and the algorithm flow through the in-depth research of A* algorithm, and realized the A* algorithm based on the Microsoft Foundation Classes(MFC) through programming, the program which implemented can realized the path planning function better.Fourth, this paper realized the path planning of virtual human in ship handling simulator. Applied the A* algorithm which was implemented to the path planning of virtual human in ship handling simulator, and realized the path planning of virtual human in the 3d rendering engine named OpenSceneGraph(OSG), made the virtual human can walk along a path without obstacles in the visual system of ship handling simulator.
