The power factor of the rural power grid is low and in recent years the use of a large number of nonlinear loads are making the harmonic problems more and more serious. This paper mainly analyzed power compensation, voltage regulation and harmonic suppression, and then the relative methods to solve the problems are proposed.Firstly, the present situation of rural grid is introduced in Jiuyuan region of Baotou, Inner Mongolia, including reforming construction of rural power network, some remaining problems after the construction and harmonic test data under lOkV lines of Naobao Institute. Then the harmonics of the area are analyzed. Aiming at the low voltages in this area, this paper gives the measurements, including the utilizing of shunt capacitor for reactive power compensation, improving power factor, reducing losses and improving the terminal voltage.Secondly, the principle and classification of power compensation and configuration principle of compensation devices are analyzed. And the corresponding calculating methods of compensation capacity with parallel capacitors are given in the paper. On the basis of analysis of suitable compensation points, the corresponding principle is given to determine the power compensation devices installed points. For the harmonic problems in rural power network, a selection method is given for selecting series reactance rates of shunt capacitors, and method to determine the number groups of different series reactance rates with various series rate ratio.Finally, for low voltage problem in 10kV rural grid, a novel method of regulating voltage of thyristor voltage regulator (TVR) is raised in this paper. The application background, working principle and main circuit selection of TVR are described in detail. Then the detection method and the control strategy of TVR voltage are analyzed and discussed. And a new method is given in voltage detection, in order to verify the correctness of the theory, a simulation model is built and it proved the feasibility of the proposed regulation method. At last, a comparison from several aspects between TVR voltage regulation and capacitor reactive power compensation is analyzed, pointing out that TVR voltage regulation has some advantages compared to capacitor.
