With the increasing of capacity and power, adverse effects of the power quality caused by the electric arc furnace become more and more serious. It brings enormous loss to suppliers and users. Therefore, it is urgent to solve the power quality problems caused by electric arc furnace.In order to improve the effect caused by electric arc furnace, a precise arc furnace model is necessary. Traditional chaotic electric arc furnace model is improved, through studying on the electric arc furnaces’ characteristics in-depth. The new chaos model combined with the parameters of the electric arc furnace has been simulated. It verifies that the model can not only reflect the chaotic nature, but also can emulate all the power quality problems caused by electric arc furnace accurately. The model provides an effective platform to the study and it is suitable for application.Currently, static var compensator is the most widely used reactive power compensation device. The compensation filter branch capacity and design parameters of the SVC have been designed based on the measured data. And static var compensator in electric arc furnaces models is applied to improve flicker, harmonics and other issues.Considering that the static var compensator has shortcomings like long response time, high harmonic content, large area, and so on, a phase separation of static var generator for a large capacity and three-phase serious asymmetry load has been put forward in the paper. Its phases are independent. Each phase can provide compensation current based on its need and share the compensation capacity. Thus greatly reduce the requirements of devices. The phase separation of static var generator can also improve phase harmonic, reactive power, flicker and other issues, especially on solving the three-phase asymmetry.Taking into electric arc furnace complex operating conditions account, a group model of electric arc furnaces’ cross operation has been built according to several electric arc furnaces putting into operation. It is the first time that people can understand the impacts caused by electric arc furnaces’ operation groups and the impact of electric arc furnaces’ start and stop in the form of simulation.
