Brake is one of the most important security components in automobiles. Drum brake has high braking efficiency, compact structure and cheap in price, it is widely used in the medium and heavy duty vehicles.The backing plate and brake shoes were the main load bearing components in the drum brake. The braking force of the automobile was transferred to the axle by the brake shoes and backing plate, so they work under high load conditions. This paper conducts finite element structural strength analysis for the backing plate and brake shoes of the 3100 type S-cam drum brake, finds out the stress distribution and the maximum stress values in the structures, and makes improvements for the weak areas based on the calculation results. Firstly, according to the existing conditions, the external forces exerted on the backing plate and brake shoes in the braking process were calculated; secondly, the finite element analysis model of the backing plate and brake shoes were established, and the structural strength analysis was finished; finally, according to the structural strength calculation results of the backing plate and brake shoes, and considering in not interfering with other components and meeting the requirements of machining and casting technology, the weak and dangerous areas of the structures were improved and strengthened, as a result, the structural strength of the backing plate and brake shoes can satisfy the work requirements.
