With the rapid development of the economy, the power grid has formed a number of large load centers. A Load center is a high proportion of electric power consumption. The lack of reactive power support is caused by the dynamic reactive power shortage becoming increasingly prominent. It is a serious threaten to power grid stability, and may even lead to a large area blackout. The support of dynamic reactive power grid is the key method to mitigate the local fault evolving from voltage collapse to blackout disasters. In order to adapt to the load density of high-pressure dynamic reactive power grid control, the capacity of STATCOM need to increase from ten Mvar spent level to hundreds Mvar, the voltage level increasing from 10 kV to 35 kV. Mvar STATCOM need to be developed to satisfy the high voltage large capacity STATCOM urgently, in order to improve the load center’s supporting ability of power grid voltage, and to prevent the local fault from evolving into voltage collapse and a large area blackout accident.This Thesis mainly takes consider on the 200 MVA STATCOM constructed in 500 kV Dongguan substation. It has two major aspects: the system design and control strategy design. Analyzing the key technologies of the current STATCOM through the system design research, it is concluded that the main topology of the chain structure of STATCOM is the chain of redundancy design and power of the inverter module selection. Through control strategy research, it is concluded that the transient voltage control of three-phase, phase-locked technology and reactive current is given feed forward control technology, and combed control strategy of the STATCOM into the system level and the equipment level. Finally, the detailed analysis was carried out on the field of engineering application combining with the 500 kV substation STATCOM Dongguan practical engineering application. Through the short circuit test, the key technical indicators of STATCOM are comprehensively inspected. The support effect of STATCOM for large power grid transient voltage is verified. Through the actual operation, the effect of performance indexes and field operation of the device are also analyzed.Smoothly and efficiently running of the Dongguan station of STATCOM project verifies the important role of the key techniques like the innovation of converter chain redundancy design and the design of the power module. At the same time, through the short circuit test and field running, it tested that the STATCOM can realize the dynamic reactive power compensation under the situation of steady state and transient.Also, every performance indicator is excellent. This can solve the reactive power shortage problem at the load center quickly and effectively.
