Substation is an important part of the power grid, take up a leading role in the conversion, distribution and control of power, and is an important basis for promoting regional economic development. Along with the implementation of the Belt and Road initiative economic development strategy and the economic rapid development of Baotou city, the demands of BaiShuGou substation expansion which shoulder the energy supply of Baotou city’s heavy industry is proposed. This paper focus on the requirements of the substation expansion project. The expansion design, the system mode of main electric connection, the selection of the main electrical equipment, short circuit current calculation and main protection is the key point of research.This paper describes the run status of Baotou Power Supply Bureau-owned power plants, substations and electricity load and focus on the analysis of the status of substation equipment, load growth and line conditions. Based on the development plan of the Inner Mongolia Power Grid, the overall design scheme of substation reconstruction is proposed.Through the analysis of the load calculation, the access capacity of substation is predicted. Using the grid of the dual mode bus, the design of the main electrical connection patterns dual busbar and the multiport overall load outlet is given.Using the method of the equivalent network,short-circuit current is calculated. The quantity of the systematic reactive power compensation is calculated by using the method of the constant apparent power compensation. The technical foundation for the design and selection of main electric equipment is laid.The main electrical connection of 110 kV power supply side and 10 kV load side is designed. The electrical parameter calculation and selection of the main circuit transformers,circuit breakers, disconnecting switch and other major equipment is completed.The design of the main protection such as gas protection, differential protection is completed and the protection functions is analyzed.Running performance of the system is analyzed. Through the actual operation of the assessment, the rationality of design is verified.
