ObjectiveTo summarize the experience of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for patients with critically ill in adults and to investigate the risk factors associated with prognosis.MethodsThe clinical data of22patients with acute severe cardio-respiratory failure supposed with ECMO admitted to intensive care unit of ZheJiang Province People’s Hospital from September2006to February2013were retrospectively collected and analyzed. According to the prognosis all patients were divided into the survival group and death group, the risk factors of prognosis were assessed.ResultsThe duration of ECMO support was2-334(M=68.50) hours,14cases (63.6%) were successful to weaned and12cases (54.6%) were discharged. The differences between the two groups of the serum lactic acid level before ECMO, heart ejection fraction, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, APACHEⅡ score, pre-ECMO ventilation duration, renal failure and the number of multiple organ failure (>3) were statistically significant(P<0.05). ConclusionECMO is an effective approach for severe acute patients with cardiopulmonary failure, the main factors of prognosis in patients is decided by whether organ function is reversible, and recognizing the risk factors is the key to the success of ECMO treatment. The serum lactic acid level before ECMO, heart ejection fraction, SOFA score, APACHEⅡ score, pre-ECMO ventilation duration, renal failure and the number of multiple organ failure (>3) may be the risk factors related to prognosis.
