Objectives To investigate the relationship between carotid sinus plaque and visit-to-visit blood pressure variability (BPV).Methods A total of5,852participants were selected from the101,510workers ofTangshan Kailuan company who received the health examination with stratified randomsampling. All the information was obtained from the questionnaire, tests of bloodbiochemistry and carotid artery ultrasonography during2010~2011period. The eligibleparticipants who were aged over40without previous stroke, transient ischemic attack(TIA) or myocardial infarction were5,440. Finally,4,703participants with sufficient datawere recruited into the survey. Visit-to-visit BPV was calculated by standard deviation ofmean systolic blood pressure measured in2006~2007,2008~2009and2010~2011.According to the location of the carotid plaques, participants were divided into unilateralsinus plaque, bilateral sinus plaques, sinus and cadres plaque and pure cadre plaquegroups. The median BPV in different groups were compared by nonparameters tests.Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors correlated toBPV.Results1Among4,703participants, including2,863men and1,840women at anaverage age of (54.1±11.2) years old, there were2,844paticipants without carotidplaques,802paticipants with unilateral sinus plaques,472paticipants with bilateral sinusplaques,509paticipants with sinus and cadres plaques and76paticipants with pure cadreplaques. The quartile of BPV is9.65(5.77,13.79) in all participants,9.68(5.77,14.12) inman, and9.56(5.77,13.36) in women.2The median BPV of none carotid artery plaques, unilateral sinus plaques, bilateral sinus plaques, sinus and cadre plaques and pure cadreplaques were (8.74、9.77、10.44、11.93、10.85) mmHg in all participants, respectively. The median BPV among the different groups were (8.46、9.65、10.58、11.56、10.34)mmHg in men and (9.02、10.00、10.01、14.26、11.95) mmHg in women, respectively.3Logistic regression analysis showed: Compared with none carotid artery plaques, bilateral sinus plaques and sinus and cadre plaques groups were associated with greaterBPV for all participants after adjusting age, gender, systolic blood pressure and other riskfactors, the Odds ratio values (95%Confidence Interval) were1.250(1.003~1.559)、 1.744(1.376~2.210), respectively. After adjusting for the factors listed above in groupsof men and women, bilateral sinus plaques and sinus and cadre plaques groups were stillassociated with greater BPV in men, with the Odds ratio values (95%Confidence Interval)were1.367(1.056~1.768)、1.646(1.254~2.160), respectively. But sinus and cadreplaques groups was associated with greater BPV in women, with the Odds ratio values(95%Confidence Interval) was2.293(1.322~3.978).Conclusions1The median BPV of unilateral sinus plaques, bilateral sinus plaques, sinus and cadre plaques and pure cadre plaques groups were (8.74、9.77、10.44、11.93、10.85) mmHg in all participants,(8.46、9.65、10.58、11.56、10.34) mmHg inmen and (9.02、10.00、10.01、14.26、11.95) mmHg in women, respectively. Theywere higher than BPV in none carotid artery plaques group.2Carotid sinus plaque maybe a risk factor of greater BPV.
