| Twenty-eight seed samples of12Plantago species were investigatedfor their chemical compositions, and anti-inflammatory, cellularantioxidant and radical scavenging properties. A novel UPLC-UVapproach was developed and applied to quantify acteoside and geniposidicacid, the characteristic constituents of genus Plantago. The amounts ofacteoside and geniposidic acid ranged from0.07to15.96and0.05to10.04mg/g in tested samples, respectively. Furthermore, twenty-six compoundswere tentatively identified by UPLC/Q-TOF-MS analysis. The Plantagosamples significantly differed in their phytochemical composition. Theextracts of Plantago seeds were also tested for their inhibition on IL-1β,IL-6and COX-2mRNA expression in LPS induced RAW264.7mousemacrophage cells. Additionally, significant variations were observedamong different samples on cellular antioxidant activities in HepG2cells,and DPPH and hydroxyl radicals scavenging capacities. The differencesand internal relationships of antioxidant activities between radicalsscavenging assays and cell models were also discussed. The results fromthis study may be useful in the application of Plantago seeds in thesupplementary food, and promote commercial production and consumptionof the genus Plantago. |
