Background:Cervical cancer is a common gynecologic malignancies. In China, the incidence of Cervical cancer is located in the first place of female reproductive tract tumors. And it has been reported that Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) gene polymorphism contributes to the development of cervical cancer. But the relationship of cervical cancer and MMP is controversial. To obtain a more dependable conclusion, this meta-analysis was performed about whether MMP gene polymorphisms confer risk to cervical cancer.Methodology/principal findiings:We selected articles including nine case-control studies with 1574 cases and 1769 controls, who come from china Korea、Taiwan、India and South India, and odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the strength of the association between matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) gene polymorphism and cervical cancer. Our meta-analysis prompted that the the high expression of MMP-2-1306C/T frequency C allele(CC+TC vs. TT:OR=2.05, 95%CI:1.29-3.27,P=0.003,I2=0%;CC vs.CT+TT:OR=1.76,95%CI:1.11-2.50,P <0.001, I2=0%; C vs T:OR=1.67,95%CI:1.35-2.07,P<0.001, I2=0%; TC vs.TT:OR=1.60,95%CI:0.97-2.63, P=0.07,I2=0%; CC vs TT:OR=2.42, 95%CI:1.49-3.93, P<0.001, I2=0%) and MMP-7-181G/A frequency G gene(GG+GA vs. AA:OR=1.51,95%CI:1.20-1.89,P<0.001, I2=0%;GG vs.GA+AA:OR=2.36,95%CI:1.60-3.48,P<0.001,12=0%; G vs.A:OR=1.34, 95%CI:1.13-1.60,P<0.001, I2=0%; GA vs.AA:OR=1.32,95%CI:1.04-1.67, P=0.02,12=0%; GG vs AA:OR=2.69,95%CI:1.79-4.22, P<0.001, I2=0%) are higher risk factors of cervical cancer. And we don’t find the relationship between MMP-1-1607bp1G/2G、MMP-2-735C/T gene polymorphism and cervical cancer. Conclusion:Our results indicate that C allele of MMP-2-1306CT and G gene of MMP-7-181GA are risk factors of cervical cancer, but not MMP-1-1607bp1G/2G、MMP-2-735C/T.
