Ferns are one of the Chinese herbal medicine resources. They have been used as traditional Chinese medicine for generations. There are many fern species are cal ed “Guan Zhong”, including the species Cyrtomium fortune, in the medicinal market. However, there is few studies about the chemical components and biological activity of the species C. fortune. In present investigation, the plants of C. fortune were collected as from Tianmu mountain, Zhejiang province. The biological activity of Et OH extracts and the n-Bu OH phase of C. fortune are investigated. The chemical materials were isolated using the column chromatography. The antioxidant activity, anticancer abilit y and antibacterial capacity were studied. The purpose of this investigation were to obtain some components with biological activity. The main results of this study are as follows:1. The materials of C. fortune were extracted with Et OH of different concentratio n. It was showed that the extract of 30% Et OH had a better antioxidant and antitumor abilities. The extracts of 30% Et OH were further extracted by Et OAc, n-Bu OH, CHCl3. Their ABTS, DPPH radical scavenging activities and acetyl cholinesterase(ache) activity were measured. It is showed that the phase had a better antioxidant activity and a strong inhibition of acetyl cholinesterase.2. Three kinds of bacteria-escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans were used to determine the antibacterial activity. It was showed that the nbutanol extract of C. fortune has no antibacterial ability.3. One compound was determined by NMR: luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucuronide. 19 compounds were conjectured by LCMS. 8 flavonoids compounds: 5-hydroxy-4′, 7-dimethoxyflavone, artocarpin, licochalcone, Quercetin-3-glucoronide, Myricetin- 3-glucoside, kaempferol-3- rhamnoside, Eriodictyol 7-O-rutinoside, nevadensin.2 phenolic compounds: Epicatechin, bokuchiol. 2 terpenoids: 1-acetyl-β-carboline, Methyl 14-methylpentadecanoate. 1 Quinonoids: 5, 8-dimethoxynaphthaquinone. 4 alkaloids: mucronine A, demethylhyoscyamine, dauricine, pronuciferine. 1 Coumarin: dihydrosuberosin. 1 iridoids and iridoid glycoside: globularin.4. The chemical compounds which contributed to antioxidant activity: luteolin- 7-O-β-D-glucuronide, Quercetin-3-glucoronide, Myricetin-3-glucoside, Epicatechin, dihydrosuberosin, kaempferol-3- rhamnoside, bokuchiol, Eriodictyol 7-O-rutinoside, globularin, artocarpin. 6 of them were flavonoids compounds, 2 were pheno lic compounds.5. Three cancer cel, SGC7901, MDA-MB-231, A549, were chosed to determine the anticancer ability of the chemical compounds of C. fortune. The analysis shows that the main chemical compounds which have anticancer ability are: 5-hydroxy-4′,7-dimethoxyflavone,1-acetyl-β-carboline, 5,8-dimethoxynaphthaquino- ne, mucronine A, licochalcone, demethylhyoscyamine, methyl 14-methylpentadecanoate, nevadensin, dauricine, pronuciferine.
