ObjectiveTo observe the functional reorganization of hand field and orofacial field in the primary motor cortex (MI) follows facial nerve lesion in Macaca rhesus and to explore the biological mechanism of "specific relationship between orofacial areas and Hegu acupoint"MethodsAfter transaction of facial nerve on the left side in 16-21weeks, using the microelectrode made of silver to study on muscle response evoked by electrical stimulation in the primary motor cortex of three macaque. Then mapping the somatotopic representation map according to the varied activated movements.Resultsâ‘  fter 16 weeks of the resection of left facial nerve in the rhesus monkey(NO.051720R), the hand and orofacial movements were evoked by electrical stimulation in the contralateral motor cortex, the hand area in the contralateral motor cortex has expanded into facial representation;â‘¡ After nearly 16 weeks of another macaque (NO.061497R) with left facial nerve amputated, electrical stimulation in the contralateral motor cortex can evoked the movements of hand and mouth or face, the hand region in the contralateral motor cortex has enlarged. â‘¢fter about 21 weeks of the facial nerve resection in the monkey(NO.071549R), the result is the same as the other 2 monkeys.ConclutionThere is an enlargement of the hand representation in the contralateral motor cortex to the facial palsy and it extended into the presumed region of the face. In a word, functional reorganization in the primary motor cortex was induced following the left facial nerve lesion.
