ObjectiveChronic superficial gastritis is a chronic inflammation of gastric mucosa caused by a variety of pathogenic factors, mainly H.pylori infection. The majority of patients either have no symptoms, or have different degrees of non-specific dyspepsia. In traditional Chinese medicine, it refers to "stomachache", "fullness" or "noisy" category. There is no effective method for chronic gastritis with modern medicine, but only symptomatic treatments. Acupuncture exerts definite curative effect in chronic superficial gastritis with its unique syndrome differentiation theory, and meridian and collateral channels theory. The purpose of this study is to explore and to observe the effect of warming needle for spleen and stomach deficiency (cold) type of chronic superficial gastritis, through a rigorous and standardized design of clinical research, in order to provide a strong evidence for the clinical treatment of the disease and to promote the rehabilitation of patients.Research methodsIn accordance with inclusion criteria,60 patients with deficiency (cold) in the spleen and stomach of chronic superficial gastritis were randomly divided into experimental group and control group, with 30 cases each. The experimental group was treated with warm acupuncture. The acupuncture points selected were Zhongwan, Zusanli, Neiguan, Gongsun, spleen Yu and Guan Yuan. Warm acupuncture points were applied on Zhongwan, Zusanli and Guan Yuan. The control group was treated with conventional acupuncture, with acupoints the same as that in experimental group. TCM syndrome score, health-related quality of life score (SF-36) and the clinical curative effect evaluation of two groups were assessed before and after treatment. The datas were processed by statistical software SPSS19.0.ResultsThe total efficiency of clinical curative effect evaluation for experimental group and control group are 90% and 86.66% respectively, with no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05), indicating a similar therapeutic effect. However, the markedly effective rate of acupuncture group is better than that of routine acupuncture group, the differences are statistically significant (P<0.05). For Syndrome of traditional Chinese medicine, Warming needle group significantly improves patients’loose stool, cold limbs, aversion to cold and other syndromes than the routine acupuncture group (P<0.05), implying that Warm Needle therapy can effectively improve the deficiency and cold syndrome of the spleen and stomach. Warming needle group significantly improves BP and GH of quality of life in patients than routine acupuncture group (P<0.05).ConclusionIn the treatment of deficiency (cold) in spleen and stomach of chronic superficial gastritis the treatment effect of warming needle therapy is better than that of the routine acupuncture. Patients’symptoms observed in multiple categories improves significantly, especially in the clinical manifestations of "deficiency" and "cold". Statistically significance is found in related data, proving that Warm Needle therapy is one of the effective methods for spleen and stomach deficiency of chronic superficial gastritis. Further research is needed.
