ObjectiveTo translate and develop the Chinese version of the Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM) and to evaluate its reliability and validity. To investigate the current status of aberrant drug-related behaviors and relative and influential factors in patients with chronic non-cancer pain.MethodsAfter obtaining agreement of the measurement’s authors, a four-stepped process adapted from Brislin’s translation model was used to translate and develop the Chinese version of the Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM). A convenience sample of 218 chronic pain patients was recruited from two tertiary A hospitals in Jinan city. Five measurements were applied for data collection:general information questionnaire, the COMM, Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 19.0. Correlation analysis and critical ratio was used to delete and retain items. The reliability analysis included Cronbach’a coefficient, split-half reliability and test-retest reliability. The validity analysis included content validity index and exploratory factor analysis. Descriptive index was used to describe current status of aberrant drug-related behaviors and t-test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to determine its relative and influential factors in patients with chronic pain.Results1. The results of item analysis revealed that the correlation coefficient of all items ranged from 0.3 to 0.85 (P<0.01) and the critical ratio of all items was statistical significant. Eventually, a 17-item Chinese version of COMM was developed.2. The results of reliability analysis showed that the Cronbach’a was 0.830, the split -half reliability coefficient was 0.834 for the total scale and the t and r value of the test-retest analysis were 0.889 (P=0.397) and 0.769 (P< 0.001) respectively, indicating the reliability of the Chinese version of COMM was good.3. The results of validity analysis showed that the CVI was 1 and four components whose eigenvalue above 1 were extracted, accounting for 65.095% of the variance, and the factor loadings of all items were above 0.4.4. The overall score of the Chinese version of COMM ranged from 0 to 35 and the average COMM score was 10.17±7.75 in patients with chronic pain.5. Single factor analysis revealed that aberrant drug-related behaviors were correlated with gender, opioid type, smoking and alcohol consumption. Correlation analysis showed that correlative factors of aberrant drug-related behaviors were age, months of opioid treatment, pain severity, pain interference, all three dimensions of pain catastrophizing (rumination, magnification and helpless), anxiety and depression. Stepwise regression analysis showed that age, alcohol consumption, months of opioid treatment and rumination were the independent influencing factors of aberrant drug-related behaviors.Conclusion1. The Chinese version of the the Current Opioid Misuse Measure(COMM) is reliable and valid in measuring aberrant drug-related behaviors and can be used as a screening tool in patients with chronic pain.2. The influential factors of aberrant drug-related behaviors in patients with chronic pain include pain category, age, alcohol consumption, months of opioid treatment and rumination.
