Objective To investigate the relationship between the expression of adhesion molecules integrins CD11 c and the prognosis of gastric cancer, and to analyze the influences of CD11 c expressed in gastric cancer on the relapse and death risk of cytokine induced killer cells(CIK) curing gastric carcinoma patients. Methods A retrospective cohort study using was used to collect demographic data, clinical data and time of relapse and death. Immunohistochemistry and multi-factor COX model were applied to detect the expression status of CD11 c and to analyze chemotherapy combined with CIK(combination group) and CD11 c expression status to impact on the relapse and death risk of gastric carcinoma patients. DC expression type was measured by flow cytometry. Results Univariate analysis revealed that the median disease-free survival time and the median survival time of gastric carcinoma patients of combination group+CD11c high, combination group+CD11c low, chemotherapy group+CD11c high and chemotherapy group+CD11c low were statistically different(P<0.01, P<0.01). After adjustment of some confounders such as sex, age, gastric carcinoma site, size, stage, metastasis and treatment method, the relapse and death risk were increased significantly in chemotherapy group+CD11c low(HR=5.76, 95%CI=2.42~13.70; HR=5.00, 95%CI=2.22~11.12, respectively), compared with combination group+CD11c high, meanwhile there exists a rising risk trend from combination group+CD11c high to chemotherapy group+CD11c low(trend test, P<0.01). We also revealed that the cellular type of dendritic cell(DC) was only CD16+DC.Conclusions Survival time of gastric cancer patients who highly express CD11 c could be prolonged after being treated with chemotherapy combined with CIK. CD11 c high expression can be used as the clinical index of the gastric cancer patients receiving the CIK treatment.
