Objective: To perform a retrospective study that the clinicopathologic features of nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid and discuss potential risk factors. To possibly improve the level of diagnosis and treatment of medical professionals. Methods:The data of 130 patients of nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid, who were underwent operation in the surgical ward of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University were conducted from January 1, 2014 to January1, 2015 in Dalian. This Case group included 21 cases of male and 109 female patients, aged between 25 and 82 years old. The 130 cases of nodular goiter with or without other benign conditions were randomly assigned to a control group during the same time. This group included 24 males and 106 females, age 13~81 years old. Seven parameters which were gender, time of life, family medical history, TSH, the number and diameter of thyroid nodules, and nodule calcification were calculated using the univariate and Logistic multivariate regression analysis. The risk factors related to nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid were analysed last. Results:Univariate analysis of the seven relevant factors indicated that the number of thyroid nodules, nodule size and nodule calcification were statistically significant(p<0.05) and may be the the risk factors associated with nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid. These related factors were processed with multivariate logistic regression analysis and the analysis indicated an inverse correlation between nodule size, nodule calcification and nodular goiter complicating carcinoma ofthe thyroid occurrence and its development thereof as well as a positive correlation between the number of thyroid nodules(less than 4) and the occurrence and development of nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid. Conclusion:The size and the number of thyroid nodules and nodule calcification were the clinical risk factors of nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid. The number of nodules(less than 4) and the smaller nodular size showed the greater the risk of nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid. These can be the risk factors of the production and development of carcinoma of thyroid.Meanwhile, the lack of nodular calcification, the microcalcifications cannot be excluded completely as these are the important diagnotic basis of nodular goiter complicating carcinoma of the thyroid.
