Objectives:To detect the expression of Tenascin-C in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cancer cell, and to investigate the significance of Tenascin-C in ESCC clinical pathologic parameters and judge the prognosis of ESCC.Methods:Expression of Tenascin-C in 136 cases of ESCC tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry, and it was observed that the correlation between Tenascin-C and patient’s age, gender, tumor size, differentiation, tumor stage, microvessel density, tumor associated macrophages and recurrent. Results:In normal esophageal tissues, Tenascin-C was mainly expressed in the basal layer with weakly positive. Tenascin-C was strong expressed in ESCC nucleus. In ESCC tissues, Tenascin-C expression rate was significantly higher in CD68 positive group (61.3%) than its negative group (43.4%) (P=0.043). And that, Tenascin-C expression rate was higher in patient with recurrence (63.9%) than in without recurrence (42.6%) (P=0.014), the differences were statistically significant. Whereas, there were no significant relation between the expression of Tenascin-C and patient’s age, sex, tumor size, differentiation, T stage, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, clinical stage and microvessel density. In Tenascin-C positive group, disease free survival rate was significantly lower than negative group (P=0.0028); and than in Tenascin-C positive group overall survival rate was significantly lower than negative group (P=0.0014).Conclusion:Tenascin-C was high expressed in ESCC, so could become diagnostic auxiliary index for ESS. And that in ESCC, Tenascin-C expression has clinical significance for patient’s recurrence and judge prognosis.
