The genus Psychotria (Rubiaceae) were widly used as folk medicine in the South China. According to Flora of China, genus Psychotria consists of 800-1500 tropical trees and shrubs, which were widly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. There were 17 kinds of species and one kind of variety in China, which were often used for dispelling wind and eliminating dampness, tendox relaxation and activation, and detumescence and relieving pain, and so on. However, chemical and bioactivitive constituents from genus Psychotria were very few except P, calocarpa, P. pilifera and P. haninanensis in China. Chemical constituents of genus Psychotria mainly contain alkaloids polymers: pyrrolidinoindolines alkaloids, harman derivatives alkaloids, and so on. Their characteristics of structures often contain glycosidic moiety, which showed different bioactivities, such as antimicrobial, antiviral and cytotoxic activity, and hallucinogenic beverages. Psychotria serpens L. and Psychotria asiatica L. were often used in the clinical medicine, however the reports on chemical constituents from them were very few. This paper is going to make a systematic research in chemical constituents of P. serpens and P. asiatica in order to further study the chemical constituents and quality standar of genus Psychotria and to enlarge the sources of medicine plants.Manjiujie was the branches and leaves of Psychotria serpens L.,which has been used as folk medicine for the treatment of swelling and tendox relaxation and activation, and so on, especially cancer instead of Caulis trachelospermi. By modern separation technologies, 12 compounds were isolated from the methanol extraction of P.serpens. Their structures were determined by NMR(1D and 2D), MS, and comparing with references. They were Psychotramide E-G(1-a,1-b,1-c), asperuloside(2), asperulosidie acid methtyl ester(3), deacetyl asperulosidie acid methyl ester(4), quercetin(5), kaempferol(6),5,7, 3<-trihydroxy-4’-meth-oxyflavonol(7),5,7,3’-trihydroxy-4’-methoxyflavonol-3-O-rutin-oside(8), rutin(9), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside(10), quercetin-3-O-(2G-β-D-xylopyranosyl-rutinoside)(11), stigmasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(12), respectively. Psychotramide E-G(1-a,1-b,1-c) were new type of cerebroside, and compounds 2-4,6-8 and 11 were the first isolated from genus Psychotria. All of compounds were the first isolated from P. serpens.Shandayan was the leaves and branches of Psychotria asiatica L., which has been used for the treatment cold and inflammation, etc. By modern separation technologies,13 compounds were isolated from the methanol extraction of P. asiatica. Their structures were determined by NMR(1D and 2D), MS, and comparing with references. They were Psychotrianoids A(1), n-bityl-β-D-fructopyranoside(2),β-D-fructose(3), asperuloside(4), asperulosidie acid methtyl ester(5),2α-3βihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid(6), betulin(7), 2β-hydroxy-betulinic acid(8), kaempferol(9), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside(10), rutin(11), quercetin-3-0-(2G-β-D-xylopyranosylrutinoside)(12), adenosine(13). Psychotrianoids A(1) was new natural product, and compounds 2,3,6-8 and 13 were the first isolated from genus Psychotria. All of compounds were the first isolated from P. asiatica.
