Objective:The aim of the present study was to fabricate Ca O/Zn O core-shell nanoparticles which possess antibacterial properties and investigate its feasibility as a root canal sealer.Methods:The Ca O/Zn O core-shell nanoparticles were prepared via precipitation method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanningelectronmicroscope(SEM) and inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometer(ICP).The film thickness, flow rate, p H,and calcium ion release from prepared samples which composed of eugenol and nanoparticles were examined. Evaluation the apical sealing ability of novel sealer by means of dye penetrationmethod. Antibacterial activities against Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated by agar diffusion test(ADT).Results:Ca O/Zn O nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and confirmed that the novel materials particles have spherical shape, core-shell constructure and particle size of 80-90 nm.The p H and calcium ion release results showed gradually increasing for the prepared nanoparticles, its flow rate was 24.22mm/10 min and formed film thickness was30μm/10 min.All these results are basically consistent with ISO 6876 standard about root canal sealer. The apical sealing ability and antibacterial activity of Ca O/Zn O core-shell nanoparticles-eugenol was significantly greater than zinc oxide-eugenol sealer also greater than i Root SP(P<0.05).Conclusion:Ca O/Zn O core-shell nanoparticles possess excellent antibacterial activity and apical sealing ability,might be expected to serve as a new root canal sealer or its composed material.
