Xia Yan is a characteristic playwright of modern drama history of China. With theidentity as both a playwright and a revolutionary, Xia Yan’s work have an unique style andfeature. Tang Tao once said that Xia Yan’s work are political lyrics. Just as Tang Tao’s words, the work of Xia Yan have very special lyrical color, with very deep feeling expressing andimplicit ways of describing. This paper is trying to discourse Xia Yan’s lyric character through three aspects. The veryfirst, in shaping the drama characters, Xia Yan focuses on portraying people’s inner world, excavating people’s subtle mental change, which has made the work containing lyric charm. While in dealing with figures, he prefers to use lyric ways, letting the figures containingsymbolic meaning, and it is hard to break him away from the intellectuals’ delicate feelings, because that shows the feature of the time. What’s more, he cares a lot about combining thefigures with whole environment, using sound, color or the change of surroundings to create amatching artistic conception to serve as a foil to figure’s inner mind, and to formulating adeeper poetic atmosphere. Secondly, in setting the drama’s conflict, Xia Yan often talks lessabout the outward conflicts, in stead he transfers the conflicts into the inward ones, whichmakes the work contains inherent tension. And the way of the conflicts’ settles always showpeople an ideal one, giving the readers hints and inspirations. The last but not the least, in thearrangement of the drama structure, his work have the features of an prose, with loose spaceand time structure, very slow developing plot, but very coordinating dramatic sentimentwhich is sad but plain.
