Zong Pu, the famous writer in the contemporary history of Chinese literature, has beenwriting articles for more than60years, involving novels, essays, fairy tales, translation, etc.Her works output is not so much, but she possesses earnest and rigorous attitude of writing.Her works always roots in traditional culture mainly on the basis of Confucianism,supplemented by Taoism. The Taoist open-minded and easy attitude of life and the natural andpure aesthetic ideal, which have great effect on her literary creation.There is a close relationship between the formation of the Taoist school’s spirit and thethree aspects---family environment, institution of higher learning culture, and historicalbackground in Zong Pu’s works. Good background of family learning enables her to receive aTaoist school’s influence on culture breeding. She grew up in the institution so that she couldobtain a pure land and gained lots of cultural knowledge. Having experienced the vagaries ofworld for half a century, Zong Pu had deep thought and reflection on life. There has anidentity of Taoism culture thought in Zong Pu’s works,which was presented as the inactionattitude of life, plain and natural feelings of the hermit, consciousness of mental life beyondphysical. Taoist aesthetics thinking also reflects in ZongPu novel,which is shown in thecharacter,works structure, and works language.The unique value of Taoist culture in Zong Pu’sworks mainly reflects concern in troublous times, in which characters of works live in, on theother hand, has a deeper level of thinking on life.The Confucian thought and Taoist thought inZong Pu’s works contradicts each other, such as intellectuals have to make the difficultchoices in the dilemma that "helping others in the world and refining themselves".We shouldread Zong Pu’s works in the traditional Chinese background of Taoist culture.We can not onlyappreciate her much profound understanding of the works and the cultural connotation ofthem,and also get a profound inspiration in our understanding of contemporary Chinese novelcreation.
