Thanks to the rapid development of Chinese tourism, more and more foreignvisitors long for sightseeing in China. For them, tourist materials written in English arethe most convenient access to tourist information. Nowadays, every region in JiangxiProvince is trying its best to develop tourism. Nevertheless, there still exist a series ofproblems in its scenic spots introductions,some of which cannot fulfill the goal ofattracting overseas tourists effectively. Therefore, C-E translation of Jiangxi scenicspots introductions deserves an immediate and in-depth research.A lot of translators have studied tourism translation from different perspectives tillnow. However, few explore Jiangxi scenic spots introduction within a clear theoreticalframework. In view of this situation, this thesis conducts a research on the C-Etranslation of Jiangxi scenic spots introduction texts under the guidance of GermanSkopos Theory, aiming to improve their translation quality.To study and solve the above-mentioned problems, the author has collected manyfirst-hand scenic spots introduction of Jiangxi and adopted qualitative method toanalyze them, which makes the thesis more practical and somewhat valuable.First, the thesis surveys relevant literature on Skopos Theory and tourismtranslation, as well as pointing out the necessity of making further studies on thetranslation of Jiangxi scenic spots introduction texts. Next, the thesis introduces basicconcepts of Skopos Theory, which proposes that the purpose of the translationdetermines the translation strategies to be adopted. Then, it discusses the text type andpurpose of the translation of Jiangxi scenic spots introductions. Through contrastivestudy of Chinese and English tourist materials, the major language features anddifferences between them are discussed and many problems of the introductions areexplored. Finally, under the guidance of Skopos Theory, four kinds of translationstrategies which are applicable to the translation of Jiangxi scenic spots introductions,namely amplification, omission, analogy, adaptation and reorganization, are put forward.The conclusion drawn in this thesis is that Skopos Theory has inaugurated a newperspective to the study of tourist text translation and it can serve as a guiding principlefor C-E translation of Jiangxi scenic spots introduction. The translator is required totake into account the differences between Chinese and English tourist texts and, withthe adoption of proper translation strategies, produce a version capable of achieving theintended functions.It is sincerely hoped that this research will draw the translators’ attention to theimprovement of the quality of C-E translation of Jiangxi scenic spots introduction textsand maximize the transmission of Gan Culture to foreign readers.
