Mr. Zhang Chongren was an outstanding artist of the20th century, with his special attainment for oil paintings, watercolor paintings, calligraphy and sculpture. Owing to my major in watercolor painting, I appreciate Mr. Zhang’s works a lot and in my thesis, an analysis of the artistic manifestation and features of his works is made from his watercolor still life paintings. The subjects of Mr. Zhang’s works range from still life, portrait to landscape. However, his still life paintings attract people most. One of the features of his still life paintings is his composition of the picture, which is seen from most of his works that he uses lots of white space in the processing of the background, or paints a light color to set the main subject off. As for the color, Mr. Zhang is thought to be influenced by the impressionism that he focuses on the cool and warm relationship of objects in light and uses more the strengthening environment color, complementary color and contrast color. Once we have a look at Mr. Zhang’s watercolor still life paintings, we will find his concise brush-using that makes his works real in objects and artistically full. We may think his works resemble mogu painting to some extent and owing to his Chinese traditional painting background his mogu painting skill improves a lot. His talent at calligraphy is also seen from the writing momentum in his watercolor still life paintings. In my thesis, Mr. Zhang’s watercolor still life paintings are analyzed by consolidating the current research and legend analysis method, which can not only help us to master the correct orientation of art but also to grasp the prospective of artistic thinking. And such research provides an invaluable reference for our art career and thus has a far-reaching practical significance.
