With the greatly strengthening of the degree of the internationalization, a varietyof international congresses and famous speeches emerge as the times require in theworld today. It is well-accepted that being one of the most important types ofinterpretation, consecutive interpreting is now widely adopted in various high-profileconferences. As a significant sub discipline of translation study, consecutiveinterpreting carries a big weight in the interpretation study. An interpreter who wantsto fulfill the consecutive interpreting task excellently should not merely have a goodcommand of bilingual knowledge and extensive subject knowledge, he or she isexpected to be excellent with interpreting skills. Based on the interpretive theory, thethesis paper addresses the interpreting strategies and interpreting skills by adoptingthe method of case analysis in the process of interpreting Remarks by the President inTown Hall at Binghamton University. The thesis paper introduces the theoretical basisof consecutive interpreting and related preparatory work firstly. Then according to therecording materials, the thesis paper summarizes some important frequently-usedinterpreting strategies and skills including literal translation and free translation, theamplification in translation and the omission in translation and long sentencestranslation and then analyses their directive functions for consecutive interpreting.Finally I hope these experience and lessons that I gained in this practice can furtherdirect my interpreting exercises.
