| Writing as one of the important language skills plays a vital role in second language acquisition. Having been studying English for years, many students still can’t perform well in writing especially those low-proficiency learners whose writing skills need to be improved urgently.Narrow Reading, which is theoretically based on Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Carrell’s Schema Theory, has been an efficient way for the improvement of learners’reading and writing, especially for students with low English proficiency. Narrow Reading has been paid much attention to by researchers and scholars of China in recent years, but their researches mainly focus on effects of Narrow Reading on reading and introduction of theoretical bases of Narrow Reading. Researches about the effect of Narrow Reading on writing are few. This thesis chose141freshemen majoring in Decoration Art Design and Art Design as subjects. During ten weeks of narrow reading treatment, questionnaire and writing test were used to explore the effect of Narrow Reading on Higher Vocational College Art students’English writing. The analysis of the experimental results gives rise to the following research findings:Narrow Reading can improve students’writing; Improvement of writing skill can be shown in five aspects:content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics; When reading materials bring line into students’current level which echos Krashen’s i+1, students’ writing competence can be improved most. Nevertheless, when reading materials are too difficult for students, there is no significant improvement in their writing score except for organization part in practical writing; Students of experimental group three who are given reading materials a little more difficult than their current level get a deeper understanding of the importance of reading and they gradually cultivate good reading and writing habits. Therefore, Narrow Reading has a positive influence on students’ writing. This research is of important value in two aspects. On one hand, the empirical experiment in this thesis enriches the subject area of narrow reading and provides data support for it. On the other hand, narrow reading not only provides college teachers with an effective way to improve low-proficient students’writing skill but also provides a new way for students to choose reading materials. |
