Reading is an important part in Chinese learning. There are many factors effecton reading speed. This article mainly discusses the effect of the word segmentation onChinese reading. Three experiments were carried out and the results are as follows:firstly, word segmentation is good for the beginning readers, and there is no effect onthe skilled readers. Secondly, when the Chinese texts are beyond the skilled readers,they need word segmentation as well. Thirdly, this paper discusses the Chinese pinyinword segmentation and the Chinese tones. The result shows that the Chinese pinyinword segmentation is more effective than the Chinese tones. Fourthly, this paperdiscusses the good effect of word segmentation on the new HSK.
