A Report On The Translation Of "Brotherly Love"

This is a translation report for “Brotherly Love”, a short story written by JhumpaLahiri, which is set in post-war India. The wording of the novel is not florid butelaborate; the plot seems simple yet arouses people’s thinking.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the author explores the skopos of both theauthor and the translation, and applies the corresponding methods to the translation.At first the author analyzes cultural background, author’s attitude and the features ofdifferent characters from macroscopic perspective, and then studies at a microscopiclevel the application of various methods such as annotation, negation etc., which areall elaborated with examples.This thesis aims to apply the Skopos theory into the analysis of the translation,and to explore how to deal with the differences between the English and Chineselanguages.
