The text of the art museum, a functional variant of English for special purpose, isa specific text of the museum text. It functions as a medium to introduce visitors theart works and their aesthetic attractions, by depicting the ones collected, exhibited,showed and studied in the art museum. Therefore, translators are responsible fortackling barriers in levels of language and culture in translating the text of the artmuseum, for the purpose of promoting Chinese culture. This report is made based onthe translation practice of museum information texts from the Ningbo Museum of Art,and it focuses on analyzing the difficulties and seeking solutions in the process of thetranslation.The author has translated the texts over100,000Chinese characters, includingones of some excellent printmaking collections and the art showrooms of two eminentNingbo local artists, i.e. Pan Gongkai and Chen Qiucao. Aiming at difficulties in thetranslation in Ningbo Museum of Art, the thesis does a research from the perspectiveof target readers’ reception with the help of reception aesthetics. The study finds thatthe difficulties can be classified into three categories, namely, the levels of language,culture and aesthetic appreciation respectively, and then it works out a principle ofdealing with the difficulties in the methods of case study, on the conception ofpursuing fusion of the reader’ s horizon in levels of language, culture and aestheticsappreciation.The report has found that levels of language, culture and aesthetics aresignificant starting points to handle the difficulties. After the case study of some typical difficulties, the author puts forward effective translation strategies of thedifficulties, including omission, literal translation plus annotation and reconstructing,in the hope of offering some reference and inspiration to following translators andtranslation studies on the related museum text.
