With the gradual deepening of economic globalization, especially since theaccession to the WTO in2001, China opens more deeply and widely to the world.Thus the demand for inter-disciplinary talents with a good command of English ineconomy, trade and international business activities is increasing by leaps and bounds.At the same time, the discipline construction of foreign language and its talentscultivation must coincide with the development of the new times. Therefore, BusinessEnglish is highly concerned and gradually developed. In March,2007, BusinessEnglish was authorized and approved by the Ministry of Education as a major forundergraduates. By2012, more than800universities and colleges in China have set upBusiness-related English major. And62universities have got the professionalauthorization of the Ministry of Education to set up Business English major accordingto incomplete statistics. And at the same time the cultivation model of BusinessEnglish is showing a tendency of diversified development.Xi’an International Studies University has developed an innovative cultivationmodel of business English--“Business English Diploma+CIMA CertificateOrientation” in2009and become the earliest universities to implant the courses ofCIMA into Business English major.Based on the Need Analysis Theory, this thesis intends to answer the followingtwo research questions:(1) What are the target needs and learning needs of the pre-experienced learnersof Business English (CIMA)?(2) To what degree the existing curriculum of CIMA Certificate Courses meetsthe target and learning needs of pre-experienced learners of Business English (CIMA)?This study adopts the methods of questionnaires and interviews whoseparticipants are the three grades of pre-experienced learners (2-4) of Business English(CIMA) major. This thesis aims to investigate the pre-experienced learners’ opinionsand evaluations on the course system and teaching process in curriculum design of thismajor, and put forward some suggestions for improvement and perfection of thecurriculum of CIMA Certificate courses, shedding some light to the diversified andsustainable development of Business English cultivation model.
