An Analytical Study Of C-E Interpretation Of Long Chinese Sentences Of Written Speech

As one of the most widely used types of interpretation, consecutiveinterpretation is commonly applied to speech, greeting, lecture, high-level meeting,news conference, etc., where interpreters are required to deliver the information ofsource language in a complete and coherent way. Generally speaking, speeches forsuch occasions are prepared and written in advance where a large number of longChinese sentences with characteristics of written language are used. Long Chinesesentence features complex structure and rich information. Whether those longChinese sentences are interpreted accurately and smoothly or not has a direct bearingon the evaluation of the interpreters’ performance.Based on the interpretation practice of the opening remarks of2013SummerDavos made by China’s Premier Li Keqiang, this thesis is a comprehensive casestudy of long Chinese sentence interpretation and is made up of five parts. Part onedefines the written speech and where it is used. Written speech is characterized byaccuracy, clarity, seriousness, simplicity in expressions and complicacy in longsentence. In the second part, a full analysis of long Chinese sentence is given. Thereare three kinds of long Chinese sentences, long simple sentences, long complexsentences and multi-complex sentences. Long Chinese sentence differs from Englishone in terms of structure and formation. Simplicity in general, parataxis, informationredundancy and conventional rhetoric are four features when long Chinese sentencesare expressed orally. Part three discusses the difficulties in interpreting long Chinesesentence into English from the perspective of language, source text and interpreter.Part four summarizes that subordination, logic and time sequence are three majorprinciples to follow when interpreting long Chinese sentences into English. On thebasis of interpreting and analyzing the speech given by Premier Li, the last partillustrates how the techniques and strategies are used in interpreting long Chinesesentences. It is hoped that this paper could provide some useful perspectives towhom may also find it difficult to handle with long Chinese sentences.
