| With the rapid pace of the social development and scientific and technologicalprogress, modern communication technology has permeated every aspect of people’s lives.It has been very common for foreign students to use the electronic aids to get information,or to communicate with others through communication tools. They are involved in a lot oflanguage input and output, so language use during this process has become an importantpart of their language lives. To research the language use of electronic equipment andcommunication tools for foreign students can make it better to know their language lives,and to improve the level of Chinese language education.The research object is the mid&senior Chinese level foreign students from XinjiangNormal University. Their language use of electronic equipment and communication toolswere investigated through the means of questionnaires, observations and interviews. Dueto geographic and political economy of Xinjiang, most students are from countries ofCentral Asia.87.3%of the103respondents are the students from Central Asian countries.The findings showed that subjects who are all bilingual or multilingual, can almostspeak4kinds of languages: their native language, Chinese, Russian and English. Of all,their acquisition of native language is the best, as well as Russian, Chinese level is in thenext place, followed by English.Chinese mid&senior level foreign students used two kinds of electronic devicesmobile phones and computers, and other common communication tools includes a varietyof network instant messaging and social networking sites. Language setting of theirelectronic devices is mainly Chinese and Russian. The trend of their language choice isrelated to their language acquisition. Most of the subjects are able to type in their nativelanguage, Chinese and Russian, with the highest levels of Russian and typing proficiency.Most foreign students are able to use four languages above to communicate withdifferent groups of people. Studies have shown that their language usage in electronicequipment and communication tools mainly affected by the following factors: First, theobject of communication. Regardless of electronic equipment and communication tools,students often choose to use different language based on different people who they talk to.They use Chinese when they talk to Chinese, while when they talk to their classmates theyuse the native language or Russian. And without knowing other’s nation or country, themajority of subjects prefer to choose their familiar language, Russian. Second, thelanguage acquisition. Students tend to choose the language which is they mastered. Third,the communication software types and their audience. When the audience of a kind ofsoftware are almost the user of a certain language, students will choose to use that language. Overall, the impact of the level of senior Chinese students’ electronic equipmentand communication tools to use the language of the most important factors is the exchangeof objects.Based on the findings, we can take actions for how can a modern means ofcommunication as much as possible for Chinese students perform input and output, andhow to make more effective use of the target language network environment. This studycan also provide a reference and basis for promotion of Chinese education by modernmeans. |
