Xiao Hong whose writing materials basically come from her experienceof life, is a personalized writer. Though her writing career lasting less than tenyears, she presents us with such classical works as The Field of Life and Death,The Commercial Street, Hulan River, Ma Bole and Small Town in March.Following her ten-year writing career, the essay digs the artistic, original andhistoriographic value of her novels by analyzing her meditation on the lovecoming from the parents, the sexual relationship and the meaning of life.Starting from Xiao Hong’s experience of life and literary creation, the paperinterprets the images of men and women from the perspective of gender andalso presents us with her attitude and perplexity about women liberty as wellas her scrutiny and criticism of men.In addition to introduction and epilogue, the paper is divided into threeparts. The first part mainly talks about Xiao Hong’s attitude about her parentsby analyzing her early works. The trauma memories of childhood leads to thelack of fatherly love and the misunderstanding of motherly love, which affectsher marriage and literary creation and also constitutes the reason why shewavers between traditional and modern style. The second part, being about thecomparative analysis of female and male characters in her middle works, displays her reflection about marriage, her attitude and perplexity aboutwomen liberty as well as her scrutiny and criticism of men. The third part isabout the overall analyzation of Xiao Hong’s literature creation, theconsistency in the themes of her works and the pursuit of art, her nostalgia aswell as her understanding of the meaning of life. Thence, it is easy for us tounderstand the fundamental reason why she is both stubborn and weak at thesame time.Xiao Hong’s works have a unique artistic value. The consistency in herfiction themes, her persistent art pursuit as well as the "warmth" and "love"dispalyed in the works deeply touch her readers. She is a pearl in the history ofmodern Chinese literature.
