A Report On The Translation Of The Miner’s Daughter

This report discusses readability at discourse level based on translating of TheMiner’s Daughter，which was written by William Finnegan. It is divided into fourchapters, namely, task description, process description, case study and conclusion. Inthe third part, case study, the author discusses the definition of readability, discourse’simportance to translation and coherence and cohesion by citing the concretetranslation examples.Coherence and cohesion, two key elements of discourse, make a text having acentral theme, which is also a vital concern of the readers. However, they are notenough to make a text being fully understood by the target readers. A text should bereadable to them. A readable translation should be grammatical correct on the phrasesand expressions, native in language with the target language, and clear in themeaning and faithful to the original text. Therefore, to discuss readability at discusslevel can make the translator considering more about difference of the language,culture as well as cohesive and coherent devices in two languages. It can also makethe translator not only pay attention to the exact meaning of the language but also beconscious of the integrated purpose and intention of the author. If we do translating inthis way, we can convey both the meaning and the unique culture phenomena fromone culture to another.In this report, the author makes a study of discourse and readability ontranslation. To be conscious of discourse, the translator can place more importance onthe overall effect of the target text, while to be aware of readability, he/she can avoidmistranslation and translationese. Through discussing translation on discourse andreadability, the author hopes the report can offer assistance to the study of discourseon translation.
