| Since the cognitive turn of metaphor in1980s, the study of metaphor has receivedwide attention among linguists. This thesis aims to comparatively study Chinese andEnglish metaphors in economic news, classify these metaphors, and find their commonnessand differences by analyzing Chinese magazine FT China and English magazine TheEconomist from the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory to propose effectivetranslation methods, contributing to the cross-cultural communication. This paper suggeststhat metaphors are frequently applied in Chinese and English economic news, thecommonness of metaphors in the two nations lies in that the same cognitive experienceshared by human beings provides physical basis for the forming of conceptual metaphors,while the differences should be attributed to the cultural and geographical differencesacross the two nations. By analyzing the commonness and specialties, we can flexiblychoose translation methods like literal translation, convertion of image of target domain,transplantation of target domain by adding explanations or notes and paraphrase. Suchfindings may compensate for the drawbacks of the current translation studies on economicnews, and promote international business communication. |
