Studies on the feedback on the second language writing have been widelyinvestigated. Recently, with the rapid development of information technology,especially the wide use of the Internet, the combination of Internet and languageteaching and learning is growing more and more closely. Therefore, it is necessary tocarry out a study on the online feedback on the second language writing.This study aims to investigate the impact of online teacher feedback and onlinepeer feedback on the writing by the experiment. Then, three research questions arefocused in the study:1. Can online feedback improve second language learners’ writing? If yes, towhat extent do online teacher feedback and online peer feedback influence secondlanguage learners’ writing respectively?2. How do online teacher feedback and online peer feedback affect the students’revision in their writings?3. What are second language learners’ attitudes toward online teacher feedbackand online peer feedback in writing?In order to address the three research questions, an experiment was carried outin two classes of Hunan University. The Engineering management class of26students was regarded as group A, who received online teacher feedback, and thenthe Building Energy class of29students was regarded as group B, who receivedonline peer feedback. The two writing tasks, the pre-test and post test writing andtwo questionnaires were collected and analyzed.Here are the major findings in the study. First, online feedback has a positiverole in the second language writing. The writing has been improved in posttest afterthe application of online teacher feedback or online peer feedback. However, basedon the analysis of posttest, students in both groups have no significant difference inthe writing level after the application of online teacher feedback or online peerfeedback. Second, students in both groups can incorporate online teacher feedbackor online peer feedback into their revisions, although there is a relatively distinctdifference in the incorporation of online feedback in the two groups. In addition,students in both groups can make successful revisions with the used feedback points.Finally, both online feedback online teacher feedback and online peer feedback areaccepted and enjoyed by most students respectively.To sum up, although the study has some limitations, it can still provide some pedagogical implications for second language writing teaching. Online feedbackshould be used in the teaching of writing to improve students’ writing.
