A Report On The Mimic Interpreting Practice Based On Craig Barrett’s Speech At Sun Yat-sen University

With the further development of economy and society, the relationship between China and the world has become closer. Thus, lots of world famous entrepreneurs come to China for opportunities and meanwhile they render speeches around. Yet interpreters work for different people. At the same time, the style of the speech interpretation is different from that of the tourism interpretation, which is flexible, casual, and also different from that of the conference interpretation, which is rigorous and cautious. Compared to them, speech interpretation is more difficult. However, it has an important place among all the interpretation works.Through those speeches, we can know the development of current international community and the successful history of the speakers. This kind of speech always has positive influence on encouraging people. Therefore, English to Chinese interpretation plays an important role in transferring this information. The author believes celebrities’campus speech can greatly open our horizon and enhance the interpreting capability. What’s more, it can better our understandings of the profession in the future. For this reason, the author selected Intel Corporate Chairman, Craig Barrett’s speech at Sun Yat-sen University to design and implement a mimic interpretation. The author carried out an analysis according to the interpretation record in order to find out the difficulties appeared in this process. In conclusion, the author will come up with practical countermeasures and suggestions for future work.According to the designed conception, this thesis firstly gives a brief introduction to simultaneous interpretation and state briefly the study’s background and writing motivation. Secondly, this thesis gives a brief introduction to the theoretical bases of the thesis. Chapter three introduces three aspects of preparations before interpretation. The next part is the analysis of the interpretation achievement and problem solving under the guidance of functionalist translation theory and the principles of interpretation. In conclusion, the author sums up the shortcomings of this mimic interpretation and comes up with practical countermeasures in order to improve the interpreting standard and perfect the interpreting task in the future.
