| With the increase of exchanges between China and western countries, the volume of the internationaltrade has been increasing rapidly. Consequently, the exhibition industry becomes more and more popular asit plays an important role in promoting trade between different countries and in political communications.Nowadays, how to develop the exhibition industry has become one of the hottest topics. In order to enterthe international market, more and more domestic enterprises began to participate in the exhibitionactivities. At the same time, the effect of exhibition publicity is also receiving widespread attention andmore and more translators began to keep an eye on the translation of publicity materials of exhibitions. However, the research on this field is still in its infancy and calls for more exploration and findings. The present thesis intends to study the translation of publicity materials of exhibitions from theperspective of register analysis. According to Halliday’s register theory, in the process of translation, thetranslator should reproduce the register features of source text in the translated version by taking intoconsideration all three variables of register, namely, field, tenor and mode, to realize register equivalencebetween the source text and target text.Adopting register theory as the framework, the author of the thesis collected and analyzedconsiderably large amount of data, and gave a detailed analysis as to how to achieve register equivalence offield, tenor and mode in the translation of publicity materials of exhibitions. The present study shows thatregister theory is very useful for analyzing the source text and for creating the target text. As field, tenorand mode respectively correspond to the three meta-functions of language, that is, ideational meta-function,interpersonal meta-function and textual meta-function, the author proposed that translators can try to buildequivalence of register on the basis of equivalence of three mate-functions of languages in the translation ofpublicity materials of exhibitions. |
