Explicit Mechanism And Implicit Mechanism In English Of Science And Technology

As the time of knowledge explosion coming, people put more attention to the field of academic research. English of science and technology (hereafter called EST) is one of the most important forms of spreading latest technology and academic exchange, and an important part in the field of academic research. Therefore, it attracts more and more researchers’ attention. However, up to now the theories referring to EST research are few and scattered, and need systematic exploration.By reviewing the research achievements and current situation of Appraisal Theory (hereinafter called AT) and Metaphor Theory (hereinafter called MT), on the basis of the previous research, it’s easy to find that the discourse analysis that the two theories are applied to mainly includes narrative discourse, literary review, public media language, historical and geographical discourse, seldom relates to EST. Therefore, the further research of AT and MT in EST deserves to explore.This paper makes studies on the special performance of appraisal system and metaphor in scientific and technological discourse, by using AT and MT, and combining with the features of EST, systematically discusses the special performance of AT and MT in EST, and summaries the realization forms of explicit and implicit mechanism in EST. The explicit mechanism is not obvious, and it is mainly realized by graduation system in AT. The realizations of implicit mechanism are embodied in three aspects. Firstly, through engagement system of AT, it is easy to find that different discourse sources and different verb forms are an important form for authors to realize implicit evaluation. Secondly, through the analysis of grammatical metaphor, the idealization of lexis is one of the forms to realize implicit mechanism. Thirdly, use lexical metaphor to realize implicit mechanism in EST.By applying AT and MT to analyze the realization forms of explicit and implicit mechanism in EST, it is of great significance to the reading, writing and translation of EST texts.
