| In recent years, the demand for Chinese-English translation of patent abstracts isincreasingly growing, which brings not only more opportunities but also hugeunprecedented challenges for translators. Owing to the lack of relevant translationtheory and method guidance, qualities of translations are usually not satisfactory. Therefore, the study on the Chinese-English translation of patent abstracts, chosen inthis project, is practically valuable.Newmark pointed out that translation activities were about the texts translation, and different text types had their own language features and functions. For differenttext types, translators should adopted different translation methods-semantictranslation or communicative translation. Patent abstract, having its own languagefeatures and information function, is very professional and differs from other texttypes. From the perspective of Nemark’s translation theory, this passage whichanalyzes and studies the whole translation process, puts forward several practicaltranslation standards and methods. This report is composed of five parts. The first part offers a brief introduction ofthe translation program, including the text contents, language features and researchsignificance; the second part is about the translation process, including preparationsbefore translation and specific translation procedures; the third part is the statement ofNemark’s translation theory; in the forth part, under the guidance of Newmark’stranslation theory, some practical translation standards and methods of C-E translationof patent abstract are put forward with some examples chosen from the project; thelast part is the summery of this translation report, as well as some limitations. |
