Indian sign language is an important way of communication which is used betweenmany Indian tribes, and attracts many American scholars’attention. This paper focuseson the NorthAmerican Plain area Indians, sorts out some sources of Sioux and Ojibwawhich is provided by the previous generationAmerican anthropologists, from theperspective of generalized writing, discusses the relationship between early pictographand Indian sign language in expressive function.The study of relation between Indian sign language and Indian pictographs hasimportant value and rich meaning in promoting prehistoric cultural studies, andexploring the origins and development law of the writing, also enriching the theory ofrelationship between language and writing.This paper is divided into5parts on the basis of searching the materials completely,applying the broad sense theory.The introduction introduces the source of this paper, source choosing informationand research method.The first chapter briefly introduce the civilization, culture, customs of the Indiantribes.The second chapter summarizes the results of research among foreign scholars inthe Indian Sign Language and Indian Pictographs, and the theoretical basis is proposed.The third chapter mainly research on the Indian Sign Language’s definition, origin,nature, types and content, etc,.The forth chapter compares the Indian Sign Language with the pictographs, toanalyze the relationship between them.In The fifth chapter, summary is made based on the analysis of the data.
