With the further development of economic globalization, countries all around the worldare communicating with each other increasingly frequent both on economy and culture.Among them, media plays a very important role. As an important part of the media, film andtelevision works, due to its fast speed of spreading and great vitality, effectively promote thecultural communication among different countries. In recent years, the rapid development ofthe world film industry, represented by the Hollywood of America, has made people form aconsensus that film and television works are running beyond borders of various countries.People gradually begin to like this recreational way to know different cultures of othercountries and the whole world. At the same time, China’s film and television works also beginto go abroad, more and more outstanding film and television works begin to spread overseas. However, due to great differences in languages and cultures, there are many difficulties inunderstanding film and television works for audiences from different countries. Therefore, film and television subtitle translation has begun to receive attention from translation circles. For most foreign audience, cultural loaded words of Chinese film and television works are themost difficult part in their understanding; For translators, cultural loaded words are also themost difficult part to translate, due to the great cultural meaning behind the subtitle itself. Therefore, from the perspective of translators’ subjectivity, this thesis tries to analyze thecultural loaded words in the film of Back to1942, which is full of cultural connotation ofChina and go further to the whole film subtitle translation, hoping to improve the quality ofsubtitle translation and let film and television works become the carrier of culturaltransmission. At the beginning, this thesis analyzes the film and television works subtitle translation, which is a special form of translation, so as to guide the translation practice from theperspective of translators’ subjectivity. Translator is the main part of translation, as well as theimportant participant of constructing the national culture. However the positon of translatorhas long been ignored in Chinese cultures, leading to a phenomenon of marginalization oftranslator’s positon. With the development of “cultural transition” in translation studies, theresearch on translator received due attention, and gradually becoming more and more mature. The content of translator’s subjectivity itself contains such three aspects as initiative, passivityand egoism, and these three aspects constitute translator’s subjectivity. A particular stress onany of these three aspects will cause a partial understanding of subjectivity, or a deprecationof translator’s subjectivity, or an exaggeration of translator’s subjectivity. Only acomprehensive understanding of the content of translator’s subjectivity can offer anappropriate attitude towards translators. This thesis tries to take the culture-loaded words in the film of Back to1942as a casestudy. Considering the lack of clear guidance of the subtitle translation of film and televisionworks, and enough attention to the translation of culture-loaded words, this thesis thinks thatwe need to give full play to the translators’ subjectivity in the process of translation, inparticular, the translation of culture-loaded words, which is regarded as the most difficult part of translation. Furthermore, this thesis analyzes some translation methods in details, for thepurpose of exploring the essence of subtitle translation and providing effective translationmethods.
