As the globalization progressively develops, English attains much greater importancein international exchange. Spoken English teaching gradually becomes a key point forChina’s English teaching. However, it’s not an easy job for many college students to freelyand fluently communicate with people in English, especially for the students at vocationalcolleges. Therefore, it’s very important for us to find an effective way to stimulate students’interest in learning and improving their spoken English proficiency. This paper adopts the combination of theory and practice. Firstly, it reviews theconcepts and theories of cooperative learning, spoken English teaching, as well as theresearch status of CL home and abroad. Secondly, the author randomly selects two classesof the same major at one Polytechnic College in Jiangxi and conducts the experiment ofCL, proving the effectiveness and feasibility of CL. Meanwhile, the author investigates thecurrent situation of spoken English teaching, and analyzes the problems and reasonsconcerned with the quality of spoken English teaching. Before the experiment, the authorholds a test of spoken English proficiency for the two classes to ensure that they are moreor less on the same level. After the experiment, the test of spoken English proficiency isheld again in the two classes, and the author finds that CL is a good way to improvestudents’ spoken English and facilitate the development of students’ non-intelligencefactors by comparison with students’ spoken English achievements and the questionnaires. In addition, the major findings made in this paper are:(1) CL effectively makesstudents know their learning motivation and attitude, as well as stimulates their interest inlearning spoken English;(2) CL effectively activates the learning atmosphere, and changesthe relationship of students and teachers;(3) CL effectively promotes students’ learningstrategy, cooperative awareness and skills, as well as their spoken English proficiency.
