| Simultaneous interpreting (SI) is a kind of interpreting activity which requires thecoordination of listening, comprehension, memorization and production all at the sametime. One major difficulty in SI is the high delivery rate and the intense information of thesource language. As one of the strategies for SI, anticipation can help lessen interpreters’cognitive load and facilitate the information processing so as to help achieve betterperformance in SI. Through a case study of the E-C SI for the book launch of CountryDriving, this paper explores the use of anticipation strategy in E-C SI. Country Driving isthe final book of Peter Hessler’s “China Trilogyâ€. It traces the development of China’seconomy and the average people’s response to economic changes. It reflects the essence ofChina’s economic transformation through telling the stories of the average people.Therefore, the E-C SI for the book launch of Country Driving is of great practicalsignificance in terms of helping Chinese audience see China in an American author’s eyes.The biggest challenge in the SI for the book launch lies in the speaker’s high delivery rateand the intense information. Given the characteristics and the difficulties in this case, it isnoticed that the use of anticipation strategy plays a considerable role in its success. Basedon Gile’s Effort Models and the schema theory, this paper exemplifies the use of language-based, form-based and content-based anticipation devices in this case. It is intended toprovide some helpful recommendations for the use of anticipation strategy in E-C SI. |
