A Translation Report On Cultural Studies:a Critical Introduction From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This is a translation report on chapter4.1of Cultural Studies:a Critical Introduction written by Professor Simon During. It is a book that introduces some cultural aspects of western world in the form of cases. The selected chapter is about television. The book is divided into different topics for the purpose of class use. The content is academic and instructive. This report may provide some suggestions for academic translation.The report consists of four parts. The first part is to give a brief introduction to the book and the author. and then analvze the translation criteria for the textbook translation. In the second part, Nida’s functional equivalence theory is introduced, and the applicability of the functional equivalence theory to the transition is discussed. The third part is the main part of this translation report. In this part, we focus on how to use the functional equivalence theory during the translation. Translation techniques are discussed at the lexical and syntactic levels. such as, conversion, amplification and omission, following the original syntactic order, reinventing sentences structures, turning phrases into clauses. In the last part of the report, the significance of language competence during translation is emphasized and discussed.This report analyzed the theoretical foundation of translation techniques and discussed these strategies during the process of translation by examples. The significance of this report is to provide some suggestions for academic textbook translation and also to make this book more popular.
