| As the first Chinese writer who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, Mo Yan has attracted extensive attention at home and abroad. As one of Mo Yan’s masterpieces, Fengru Feitun represents the history from Anti-Japanese War to Reform and Opening up by the fate of Shanguan Family. Upon publishing, the book crated much of a stir. The thesis aims at studying its translation Big Breasts&Wide Hips.Scholars have conducted many researches on Big Breasts&Wide Hips from the perspectives of culture turn, post-colonialism translation theory, skopos theory, the visibility and invisibility of the translator, the subjectivity of the translator, ecology translation studies, translation compensation and relevance theory and so on. However, the researches pay more attention to a certain aspect of the text and thus are insufficient in comprehensiveness and integrity. In the thesis, the Adaptation Theory will be applied to analyze the translation text. With the guide of this theory, the contextual correlates of adaptation discusses how the translator makes adaptations in social and mental contexts; structural objects of adaptation studies how the translator makes adaptations in language structure, style and cohesion; dynamics of adaptation analyzes how the translator chooses the translation strategies and the lexical meaning dynamically; salience of adaptation process reflects the translator’s adaptation consciousness. After the study of translation from adaptation theory, it is found that. the translator dealt with the relation between "faithfulness" and "readers’ expectation" subtly. In the translation, the translator adapts to the writer’s writing intention by preserving the Chinese elements. Besides, the translator adapts to the readers’ reading expectation and requirement by taking their cognitive, psychological and social context and reading habit into consideration. Therefore, the translation achieved adaptation successfully. As one pragmatics theory, adaptation theory has showed its explanation of translation phenomena. Therefore, studying the translation of Big Breasts&Wide Hips from adaptation theory can bring enlightenment to later studies. |
