Libai is the outstanding representative of romanticists in China andeven in the Oriental world while Wordsworth is the prominent exponentof romanticists in Britain and even in the Occidental world. Thepublication of The Lyrical Ballads won Wordsworth great reputation of a“poet laureate” and marked the beginning of the romantic period inBritain. Libai’s poetry gave him great fame of being a poet immortal. Heis considered as the most famous romanticist since Quyuan in our longliterary history. Their works are not only the valuable treasure for theirown country but also the precious rarities in the world’s literature. So far, the respective study on Wordsworth and his poetry or that onLibai and his poetry are countless, however, the number of thecomparative study of poems written by these two poets can be counted byfingers. The only one found by the author is the research of Zhu Lingyi. His research mainly focuses on the similarities and differences of theirpoems with the theme of nature from the rhetorical perspective. In fact, as romanticists, both Wordsworth and Libai wrote poemswith more shared themes, such as nostalgia, female and seclusion as wellas the theme of nature. Each theme can be divided into several subthemes. As far as the expression of these subthemes and the employment of theliterary techniques are concerned, there are many similarities anddifferences between the poems written by these two poets. It is the hidden, formless but workable cultural factors that account for the appearance ofthese similarities and differences. This is what the thesis is about. One point to be mentioned is that although the number of poemswritten by these two peers is so great, seven poems by Wordsworth andeighteen poems by Libai are selected as the material used in this thesis duo to the limited length of it. This is the limitation of the thesis. Therefore, more comparative research of these two poets and their poemsare necessary to enable us to have deeper and more comprehensiveunderstanding of these two talents’literary creation.
