"Coin Locker Babies": Consciousness Of Social Crisis In Ryu Murakami’s Literary Works

Since the Tokyo Olympic Games in the1970s, Japan’s economy has beensustained, high-speed and stable growth, and gradually become the world’s secondeconomic power. As the “miracle " as substantial increase of Japan’s economic hasreference and using external factors, the period of Japanese literary world, there is abatch of Euro-American literature, especially the influence of American modernliterature writers. With Murakami Ryu as the representative of the "transparentfamily", this period is the emergence of the so-called decadent literaturerepresentative."The transparent family" most writers are young people, because of the growthenvironment, the number of young people most experienced student protests and"security" movement, so their literature also have to leave the imprint of this era.These writers attempt to describe the real life, especially about the theme of thesocial crisis, such as violence, sex and drugs, to expose the Japanese social crisis,and thus formed its unique style. Because Murakami Ryu’s masterpiece “NearlyUnlimited Transparent Blue”, the creative tendency of these writers has named "BlueGeneration" in the history of contemporary Japanese Literature.The novel "Coin Locker Babies" is another masterpiece after Murakami Ryufollowing the Virgo “Nearly Unlimited Transparent Blue ", has won the third Nomaliterary award. Works by describing the growing experience of two abandoned babyin the locker, and grew up to the personality of the distortion and ultimatelydestruction, showing the fickleness in Japanese society at that time and a lot ofcharacteristic of unease and spiritual crisis.The works expressed the loss of human nature and the media urban much adoabout nothing, and meanwhile, it also reflected from another side of the Japaneseyoung people in this society of helplessness and struggling, trying to find some wayout but incapable of action of reality. Although there are many works of violence andsexual description, but through the two different character of the infant art ofdescription, it has won the great critical acclaim.This article mainly express Murakami Ryu’s novel artistic personality from fouraspects, and reflect the theme of the works of profound and original.First, the author thinks, Murakami Ryu’s life experience and the influence of theJapanese national character, is an important element of performing the life. If missing these two things, so that there will not have the artistic achievement of“Coin Locker Babies”.Second, according to the text of the actual, this paper analyses the twoprotagonists-Kiku and Aju’s personal character, aimed at understanding the writingpurpose and artistic work through this approach.Third, the artistic originality and individuality, the existing research results areusually "non mainstream" to be identified, this paper analyzed as the master ofMurakami Ryu’s "non mainstream" art connotation, which in theory on MurakamiRyu’s writing methods to make further explanation.Fourth, arise of “Coin Locker Babies " is not an isolated phenomenon. In thisarticle, through the continuation characteristics of subject consciousness, related“Coin Locker Babies ",“Nearly Unlimited Transparent Blue” and “SymbiosisWorm” together to understanding, so as to explore how the writers are conscious ofthe Japanese laws and characteristics of social crisis.
