Epigraph Compilation of Tang Dynasty epitomizes a large majority of epigraphsin Tang Dynasty with3607squares in total. The Compilation arranges the sequenceof epigraph masters by their buried time, in addition, those epigraphs are bounded bythe title of an emperor’s reign and then numbered respectively. All the popular formof characters, old style, current simplified characteristics at that time and new wordscreated in the reign of Wu Zetian are all changed into current traditional Chinesecharacters, and it employs the new punctuations. All the epigraph masters areappended at the end of the book as name index except their remote ancestors andallusions.Tang dynasty is a significant period in ancient China in which bureaucracy hasestablished. The primary ways of engaging in politics in Tang dynasty are, menyin,off-staffs becoming in, getting military exploit, being filial piety and incorruption,recruiting, etc. The development of the ways of engaging politics is directly related tothe means of choosing officers and officers’ level, and even have a great influence onthe whole Tang dynasty political system.Epigraph is a peculiar literature type, which focus on recording epigraph mastersdates of birth and death, as well as their biographies, etc. Epigraph can be comparedwith handed-down documents, and further contributes to do textual criticism andremedy on handed-down documents. By this way, we can understand engaging meansin politics in Tang dynasty accurately and completely, and then have a comprehensivecognition to the political system in Tang.This thesis on the basis of Compilation organizes information about engaging inpolitics in Tang systemically and completely, and deeply researches their prospectsand developing tendencies, at the same time, tries to make a discussion about thecharacteristics of the whole officer-selecting in Tang dynasty. It consists of fourchapters. Chapter one talks about annotations of Gongju in Tang dynasty on the basisof Compilation. Chapter two discusses annotations of Menyin in Tang dynasty basedon Compilation. Chapter three extends annotations’ information in other ways toengaging in politics in Tang by Compilation. Chapter four summarizes all the ways of engaging in politics in Tang dynasty according to Compilation.
