Chen Rong is a realistic writer with a mission to write social problems in the newage. She keeps writing for ten years since her masterpiece Men of Middle Agepublished in1980, and creates a wide range of diverse subjects and styles’ socialproblem novels with female acute insight. Hence, Chen Rong plays a key role in thecontemporary literature. However, according to the current attitude of academiccircles to the research achievements on Chen Rong’s work, her work always beclassified into humanitarianism or mixed up with female writers which just beenmentioned just a little bit by popular literary history textbook except the book specialcollection study of Chen Rong which published in1984. The study of Chen Rongmainly focuses on the critical articles in magazines and journals, whereas little studyhas been made about her work from the angel of social problem novel, let alone acomplete system. Therefore, it leaves a large field to Chen Rong’s study undoubtedly.This thesis intends to probe into the uniqueness of creation, diversity of theme,social effect and art limitation of Chen Rong in new age from the point of socialproblem novel. On the one hand, we aim to discuss the author’s unique and particularthoughts towards history, reality and life; on the other hand, we would like to takeChen Rong’s humanism and social consciousness as a right value guidance to theliterary circle which full of commercial elements, striving to back to the valuepriorities of “for life”,“for society” in literature.This thesis consists of three parts, which are introduction, body and conclusion.The body of the thesis divides four parts to launch the elaboration.Part one: the writing background and its uniqueness of Chen Rong’s problemnovel in new age. This part mainly analyzes the literary features in1980s and theappearance of “Chen Rong phenomenon” under this background, and then present theuniqueness from angles of being different from herself and others.Part two: Chen Rong’s profound analysis to complex real life. The author tries tomake a overall comprehension to problem novel from the views of village, marriageand intellectuals. Moreover, attempts to realize her sincere humanism based on theprofound understanding on rethinking history and criticizing reality;Part three: social effect of problem novel-------take her masterpiece Men ofMiddle Age as an example. In this part, we take the controversies caused in1980s on this book as arguments. By means of reading related data and return to the discoursestandpoint in literary history, we organize and summarize the sensational controversysystematically and objectively from the perspectives of work theme, female imageand methods, and thus to perceive her work’s strong social effect;Part four: the creation value and aesthetic limitations of Chen Rong’s novel. Thepurpose of this part is to make a objective and neutral comment on her creation fromliterary history view. The author affirms Chen Rong’s creation achievements andcontribution on the one hand, and at the same time makes a rational analysis to thelack of literature penetrating power.On the whole, Chen Rong is a persistent problem novelist in modern literaryhistory. Though her creation has its historical limitation, the sense of responsibilityand participation in her mind which possessing timeless social universal value can besufficient to encourage any generation of writer to fight forward.
