With the deepening of globalization, China’s technical exchanges with othercountries are continuously increasing, thus the demand for Sci-Tech translation isinevitably growing. As China is a giant country for machinofacture, its foreignexchanges for the machine-building industry is naturally found to be growing. Therefore, mechanical translation plays an increasingly important role in today’ssociety. This thesis is a report on the translation of machinery English texts, mainly basedon my translation practice on a mechanical book. With special reference to theexamples selected from Materials Selection in Mechanical Design(Fourth Edition),the author summarizes the characteristics of machinery English texts, under theguidance of the Skopos theory of the functional translation theory, and comes up withtranslation strategies. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter1, the introduction, describes theresearch background and significance, introducing the research approaches and stepson the whole. Chapter2describes in detail the translation process, that is, thepreparation stage before translation, the translation stage and the proofreading stageafter translation. Chapter3summarizes the characteristics of machinery English texts, and put forwards the translation strategies by the case studies selected from the texts, under the guidance of the Skopos theory. The author hopes that the methods presentedin the thesis would do some help in the translation of mechanical English and Englishfor science and technology in the future. Chapter4makes a conclusion on the report, listing the research results, pointing out the limitations in the report, and forecastingthe bright future of the translation of mechanical English and English for science andtechnology. After the body text are the bibliography and appendixes of this thesis, which list the detailed items cited and referred to by the author, and the Englishmaterials and the translation versions used in the thesis.Mechanical English belongs to English for science and technology. Because of itsunique characteristics, the translation quality varies greatly, and some translations aredifficult to understand. This thesis summarizes the characteristics of machinery English texts, and comes up with translation strategies systematically, in the hope of providinga reference to the research on the translation of mechanical English, and a guidance tothe professionals at home in understanding and studying the advanced scientific andtechnical literature abroad in the future.
